Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course is a comprehensive training program that equips students with the knowledge and skills to effectively protect themselves and others from potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. This course is specifically designed to meet the requirements set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for bloodborne pathogen training when combined with site-specific instruction. It incorporates the latest scientific and educational guidelines from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

This program is highly recommended for individuals who may have a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens. This includes professionals such as correctional officers, childcare workers, security guards, maintenance workers, school personnel, hotel housekeepers, health and fitness club staff, and tattoo artists.

Throughout the course, students will learn essential skills to ensure their own safety and the safety of others. Key learning objectives include:

• Protecting oneself from blood or blood-containing materials: Students will learn proper techniques for using personal protective equipment (PPE) and implementing standard precautions to minimize the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
• Acting quickly and safely: Students will understand the importance of prompt and appropriate actions in response to potential exposures, including safely removing contaminated gloves and performing hand hygiene.
• Cleaning the area with blood or blood-containing materials: Students will be trained in proper procedures for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that may be contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
• Reporting incidents to supervisors: Students will learn the importance of promptly reporting any incidents involving potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens to their supervisors or designated personnel, ensuring appropriate follow-up and documentation.
